Today's Fab*Mom is Amy, of All The Buzz Cookies. She's actually the sister of our very own production coordinator, KellyAnn! She makes fun and fabulous cookies for all occasions! Let's get to know Amy a little better...
It may sound so cliche, but I truly love everything about being a mom. The rides home from school hearing all about the day, folding the laundry and realizing the clothes keep getting bigger and bigger as they grow, scratching backs and singing before bed, the family vacations, ping pong in the garage, cooking dinner and family talk around the table. I love seeing all the hard work paying off when it comes to teaching kids about character, manners, caring about people, respecting authority. I love watching my kids grow into their own unique personalities and sense of humor.
How has motherhood changed your outlook on life and your career?
Motherhood has made me realize how valuable time is and how I need to always prioritize wisely. I feel like raising my kids is my real career!
How did you come up with the idea for your All The Buzz Cookies?
I started occasionally baking and decorating sugar cookies for my kid's birthday parties or for classroom activities and enjoyed it. My next door neighbor really pushed and encouraged me to do it as a business and she was my first client. It really started by word of mouth once people saw and tasted my cookies. I never get tired of doing cookies because there are so many shapes, sizes and techniques to use. Each order can be so fun to figure out colors, techniques, etc. I am constantly learning thanks to some amazing ladies and their cookie blogs /tutorials. My absolute favorite is Sweet Sugarbelle. (Ed. note: We were drooling over the cookie gallery on Amy's site - you can see all her fabulous creations there!)
We love hearing about children’s names – how did you choose yours?
My daughter is Ellie. Years ago when I heard Katie Couric on the Today Show talk about her daughter with that name, I knew I would someday use it. Her full name is Ellie Livey, which is my mother-n-law's maiden name. My son is named Matthew after his dad and his middle name is Charles for both of his grandfathers.
How do you find balance between working and caring for your family?
My children and their activities absolutely come first. So it might mean I am bagging cookies at 5 a.m. or putting on final touches at 10 at night, but that is the beauty of it! I make a conscious effort to stop what I am doing if one of my kids needs me or just wants me to play for a little bit. Right now I am investing in my kids and I will have plenty of time to grow my business. The balance part gets difficult at holiday times because those are my busiest cookie order times and that is such a busy family time too. It can get a little overwhelming! I eventually want to be able to handle orders like the one I couldn't fill last summer....15,000 Mario stars!
Who is your favorite celebrity mom?
Awesome moms who have raised awesome kids are the true celebrity moms to me but if I had to pick I'd say Gwyneth Paltrow or Reese Witherspoon.
Any words of advice for other Fab*Moms out there?
Thank you for sharing with us today, Amy!
