The Proper Use of Inner and Outer Envelopes
Since the beginning of time we have been using two sets of envelopes for invitations. Just kidding...but this is a long running tradition in the invitation field. According to Emily Post's Etiquette: 17th Edition, there are some rules you should stick to when addressing these gems.
Close family and friends-Address the outer envelope with full names, but use the inner envelope for familiar names.
Married couples with young children-Use the parents full names on the outer envelope, but name the children on the inner envelope along with the parents.
Teens in the home-Children 13 or older should receive their own invitations, if this is not possible send it with the families using the title of Miss or Mr.
Couples who live together-Address one invitation to both as long as you know that the two people live together as a couple.
An invitee and a guest-Address the invitation to the invitee on the front and include "and Guest" on the inner envelope.
I hope this helps your inner and outer envelope inquiries. Please feel free to post any of your etiquette questions and I will be more than happy to help!
