Foil Stamping is a bit different from most other types of printing in that it uses foil, heat, and pressure to "stamp" the image or letterform onto to the object you wish to print onto. This is by far my favorite type of printing for things like invitations because of how classic it looks. Especially the flat foils. This printing almost has an old world, hand made feel. It almost looks like giant electronic machines had no part of this printing process.
There are many types of foil papers and colors you could use. Flat or more metallic foils are available as well as even holographic foils. The metallic foils are more common on Holiday Cards and Holiday Invitations while the Non metallic foils are more common on wedding invitations. This invitation is using a flat/non-metallic white foil paper. What I really like about foil is that you can print a WHITE foil onto a dark paper without any bleed through with the ink. You dont have to worry about "caking" the ink on like you do in thermography printing to get a solid solid color. Note in the photo that there is a slight embossing from the stamping process.
When you're choosing your invitation think about how you would like to see your lettering printed. Foil Stamping using a non metallic foil paper would definitely be my choice for sure.
The invitation shown is Jean M Wedding Invitation called "Candy Apple Crave". Jean M offers many wedding invitations with foil stamping as per the image shown.

I found a cool sit http://www.edliveshere.com that shows how foil stamping works:
